Shelby Russell

The Financial Sister

I have been on a journey of discovery over the course of my career, or careers, plural.  Most of our clients already know that I didn’t begin my career with John (Dad) in the financial world, but as a licensed Family Therapist in California. After 16 years in that field, I began to think “What’s Next?” and I eventually figured out that I wanted to return to graduate school, this time pursuing an MBA. I wanted to expand my knowledge base from counseling and psychology to the business world. As I was completing this graduate program, I also began to realize that I was ready to return home to Texas.

I first found my way to the DFW area in 2004 and ended up working in a hospice company where I learned a great deal about end-of-life care and the amazing people who provide that care. A few years later (2007) I ultimately returned to my hometown of Lubbock, and to my surprise, discovered a new career as a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® practitioner with the added joy of working with my father, sister and now my nephew.

I passionately believe in empowering individuals and families to make proactive vs. reactive plans, serving as a resource in planning for current and future life goals and transitions, and providing some support in crisis situations. I absolutely love this work with our amazing clients (friends) and feel like my work has a purpose beyond addressing financial needs.

Like John and Sherryle, I am committed to a practice of continuous learning and growth through on-going education and training opportunities. I have also realized that I frequently learn a great deal from our clients as we work together to uncover creative solutions to unique challenges.

While this work is full of purpose and fulfillment, I find great enjoyment outside of work with volunteer activities and my new almost-obsession with crafting sourdough bread and other sourdough treats. I sometimes refer to myself as a “sourdough evangelist” and truly love sharing the results with family and friends. I still love traveling and planning trips to amazing places, and in some respects am still asking: “What’s Next?”, with anticipation for the next adventure or joyful experience to come.
