John Russell is the founder and principal of The Advisors Group, providing tax and financial management expertise since 1978. Professionally, John has earned the professional designations of Certified Financial Planner (CFP), Enrolled Agent (EA), and most recently, Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy (CAP).

John is personally committed to continuing education and professional excellence, building upon his bachelor’s degree from L.I.F.E. College in Los Angeles.  He remains on the cutting edge of developments in his profession through a heavy schedule of seminars and training, as well as active membership in the Institute of Certified Financial Planners, International Association of Advisors in Philanthropy, the National Association of Enrolled Agents, and the Texas Association of Financial and Tax Specialists (TAFTS), for which he honorably served as State President.

John Russell’s commitment to excellence is not limited to his clientele, having shared his expertise as a local civic speaker and statewide lecturer on trust and estate planning for TAFTS, a TV guest commentator, and hosting a weekly radio show for 15 years.

Outside the office, John has served in various positions in community and school endeavors and currently serves as a leader in his church.  For personal recreation and challenge, John has been inspired by his grandsons to become a student of Shotokan Karate.  Having earned his 1st Degree Black Belt, he continues to strive for excellence and progression.  John and his wife, Sugar, also stay busy with the lives of four adult children, their spouses, 13 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild, keeping them in touch with the younger generation.

Shelby L. Russell, MA, MBA

Shelby Russell began her education at Texas Tech in Counseling (Human Development and Family Studies) and continued that path in California with a Master’s degree in Counseling and licensure as a Marriage and Family Therapist. She went on to gain experience in the non-profit world, not only in Counseling and Social Work, but later adding fundraising and public relations experience. She returned to school again in 2002 to earn an MBA with a specialization in leadership and management.

Shelby eventually returned to Texas in 2004, and following a stint working in hospice in DFW, she came home to Lubbock, and joined The Advisors Group in 2007… certainly not the typical path of a Financial Planner! This broader focus on the lives of individuals and families actually created a perfect fit for The Advisors Group and our approach to working with our clients in the context of their whole lives, rather than limited to just their financial concerns. Of course Shelby went on to obtain her certification in Financial Planning, and has had the great luxury of mentoring from John (aka “Dad”).

As a result of her background and experience, Shelby not only works in all aspects of financial planning, she specializes in working with our clients’ life transitions, whether these are as a caregiver, caretaker, parent, college student, entering retirement, etc. These common transitional experiences can be both complex and chaotic, depending on the circumstances. Shelby’s job is to help you sort it out, and make proactive plans whenever possible, rather than waiting until a crisis occurs.

While she finds great meaning and purpose in her work/day job, Shelby is also passionate about traveling and giving to the community through the Mother-Daughter Program. This program is a collaborative between TTU, LISD and the American Association of University Women to introduce 1st generation, 6th grade girls and their mothers to the vision of a college education. She loves traveling, and so far has been to China, Costa Rica, Ireland, France and Italy. There is still a long list of places and adventures yet to come, and Shelby enjoys talking and sharing travel adventures and dreams with our clients.

Sherryle Russell Cantu, EA, RP

Sherryle started officially working with John in 1986 and has done just about every job in the office. Over the years she has enjoyed being the behind the scenes person, managing the office and overseeing the out of sight matters. Working with John, she discovered her love of the treasure hunt and thrives on taking a chaotic situation and creating order. Whether with a set of books, an office routine, or a tax return, she enjoys digging through muddled layers of disarray to arrange and construct the desired end product. After many years working full time and then transitioning to part time to raise her sons, Sherryle came back full time to The Advisors Group in 2008. She began her certification process by obtaining her Registered Paraplanner designation in 2013 and finished up her Enrolled Agent designation in 2015. It has been a long journey of hands on experience for over 30 years and she was thrilled to be officially certified for what she’s been learning for decades at her dad’s (John) side. Working with her family and our long-time clients is very satisfying, but it is Sherryle’s boys that are her life’s passion. She is blessed with three amazing sons and she enjoys being involved in their lives and activities. As they are one by one growing out of her home, she has begun the process of lining her soon-to-be empty nest with other things and activities. Sherryle currently has two dogs and is extremely active in her church, helping in the church library, the Women’s Council and Bible study, as well as a ministry to single moms. She is a lover of books, movies, music and all things purple.

Karen Strange

Karen Strange

Karen Strange came to us in 2010 and we don’t know what we’d do without her. She’s our meeter and greeter and all things in between. She’s usually the first one you see at her reception desk and the last to wish you farewell as you leave. And what a way to begin and end a visit! Karen is also the one you hear when you call and she’s so wonderful at helping you get the answers you need, whether it’s an appointment or a document or mailing address. In her spare time, Karen enjoys working as a barista in her church coffee shop, traveling, cooking and reading. She also loves being a wife and mother.
